The Effect of Alkalosis on the Relationship between Serum Calcium and Protexn in Vivo*

چکیده

In the absence of definite experimental evidence, it has generally been assumed that the symptoms of tetany associated with increases in serum pH are due to a decrease in the concentration of ionic calcium. However, by means of the frog heart method, McLean and Hastings (1) were unable to demonstrate any significant change in calcium ions with change in pH. Because of the relatively narrow pH range in which these investigators worked, and the limited range of sensitivity of the method, no definite conclusions were offered, and the question of the effect of alkalosis on the capacity of protein to bind calcium was left open. It has been abundantly confirmed that the concentrations of total calcium and protein in serum, in the absence of recognizable defects of calcium metabolism, bear a linear relationship to each other. This has been expressed by the regression equation, total Ca = a X total protein + b, in which a and b are constants. Using data accumulated in the literature, McLean and Hastings (1) have demonstrated that the value for the intercept b in this equation is a close approximation of the concentration of ionic calcium as determined by their frog heart method, under normal conditions. On the basis of these considerations, the relationship between total calcium and proteins in the serum of normal animals, and those with marked elevation of serum pH, was studied. It was hoped that by these means some idea would be gained as to the effect of alkalosis on the ability of serum protein to bind calcium

Study on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine

Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...

Relationship between Serum Calcitonin Levels and Osteoporosis in Female Patients Aged 40-70 Years

Background and purpose: Osteoporosis is a general skeletal disease characterized by decreased bone mass over the years, bone fractures, decreased bone strength, and consequently increased bone fragility and fracture susceptibility. There is paucity of information about the effect of calcitonin on osteoporosis in Iran. The current study aimed at investigating the relationship between serum calci...

The Relationship Between Maternal Serum Levels of Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium with Preterm Labor: A Case-Control Study

Introduction: Preterm delivery is one of the essential midwifery problems, which causes a large proportion of infant mortality even in advanced societies. Despite advances in pregnancy care, the frequency of preterm delivery has not decreased. This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium level with preterm labor in pregnant women. Methods: In ...

THE EFFECT OF ALUMINUM ON BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS RELATED TO BONE METABOLISM. A MODEL STUDY OF HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS

The influence of aluminum on some serum parameters related to bone metabolism has been investigated by daily administration of aluminum over different periods of time. Daily administration of aluminum (1 mg/kg BW) for 20 or 50 days elevated serum phosphorous concentration by 16 percent and had no significant effect on serum calcium level. When aluminum was injected as a complex with citric...
